Cittadella Maths Trail:

The aim of this activity, the Cittadella Maths trail, is for the students

to use the Mathematics that they learn in the classroom and to apply it to

real life situations. During the trail, the students are engaged in a

number of mathematical activities prepared for them by the Mathematics

teachers from our school.

The students, divided in groups, have to work on a number of

activities collaboratively. These activities are spread over various places

around Cittadella in Victoria, such as at the square and in the streets, on

the bastions, at the Archaeology Museum and also at the Gran Castello

Historic House. The activities included:

- working the gradient to draw conclusions about the steepness of a

wheelchair lift

- estimating the weight of Majmuna's tombstone by taking proper

measurements and working its volume, and

- working out the height of the bell tower built on St. Michael's

bastion using a clinometer and trigonometry.

The students have to use their problem solving and mathematical

skills to find a solution for the problems prepared for them. This activity

helps the students realise that Mathematics is used in everyday life, thus

making it more tangible and valid. Moreover, it helps to foster problem-

solving skills and collaborative work.

All students received a certificate of participation.
